Founders usually look up Chief AI Officer pricing when AI has moved from a feature request to a board question: the roadmap depends on AI work nobody is accountable for, an enterprise customer wants governance answers, or an investor wants to know whether the AI is real. This article covers the price, what each price buys, and how to tell which level you need. For the role itself, see what a fractional Chief AI Officer is. For the service, see our fractional AI officer page.
The three tiers
| Tier | Monthly fee | Time | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Advisory | $8,000 | 1 day a week | Strategic guidance, model and architecture review, AI hiring calibration, board AI prep. No day-to-day ownership. |
| Fractional | $15,000 | 2 days a week | Embedded leadership: AI roadmap ownership, model selection, eval harness, hiring, governance. |
| Embedded | $25,000 | 3+ days a week | Near full-time CAIO involvement: major AI re-platforming, agent architecture, regulated AI rollout. |
What decides which tier you need
Whether you already have an ML team. If you have ML engineers who ship, and what is missing is executive oversight, Advisory adds the senior layer above them. If nobody owns the AI roadmap, model choices and evaluation, you need at least the Fractional tier, because someone has to make those calls every week.
How much is changing. Adding one AI feature to a product with traction needs less time than re-platforming around agents or rolling out AI in a regulated workflow. Those need someone close to full time for a while, which is what Embedded is for.
What is riding on it. Due diligence on your AI claims, an enterprise customer blocking on governance, or a regulated rollout under HIPAA, SOC 2 or the EU AI Act raises the stakes on every AI decision. More time goes into getting them right.
Because terms are month to month, moving from Embedded down to Advisory once the strategy is set and the team can execute is a change of tier, not a new contract.
How it compares with a full-time Chief AI Officer
A full-time Chief AI Officer costs $400K+ a year all-in. Our tiers come to $96K to $300K a year, so even Embedded comes in under it. The bigger difference is time: a fractional CAIO is usually embedded within two weeks, while a full-time search takes months before the work starts.
That doesn't make fractional right for everyone. You may not need a CAIO at all yet if your AI work is one or two simple integrations that don't change product strategy, if a staff-level ML engineer or VP of Engineering has already shipped AI in production, or if you are pre-seed with no AI strategy decisions in flight.
What the first weeks look like
Every engagement starts the same way, whichever tier you choose:
- A 30-minute call to understand the product, your AI ambitions, the current stack and the question driving the engagement.
- A two-week AI audit: model and infrastructure review, eval coverage analysis, governance and compliance gap assessment, and an assessment of the AI team. You get a written report ranked by ROI against risk.
- A 90-day plan with three measurable AI outcomes for the quarter, agreed with you in week two.
Chief AI Officer, CTO, or both
A fractional CTO covers the breadth of engineering: backend, frontend, infrastructure, hiring across all engineering. A fractional Chief AI Officer concentrates on AI: model strategy, evaluation, governance, ML hiring and enterprise AI sales support. If AI is a feature inside your product, a CTO with AI experience may be enough. If AI is the product or the differentiator, you want a dedicated AI officer.
Many companies engage both. Each role is priced on the same tiers, $8K, $15K or $25K a month, and the first call confirms which tiers fit. Our fractional CTO services cover the generalist layer.
For private equity portfolio companies
Operating partners often want AI deployed across several portfolio companies without hiring one full-time CAIO per company. A fractional CAIO can work across portfolio companies in coordination with the operating partner. Embedded is the tier our service page lists for PE portfolios, enterprise rollouts and companies in critical AI phases.
If you want to start with one feature
If you would rather prove one use case before committing to a retainer, the AI Build Sprint is 4 weeks at a fixed price of $18,000: one AI feature live for real users by week 4, plus a 90-day AI roadmap.
The short version
A fractional Chief AI Officer costs $8,000, $15,000 or $25,000 a month for one, two or three or more days a week, month to month with 30 days' notice, against $400K+ for a full-time hire. Pick the tier based on who owns AI today and how much is changing, and expect to move between tiers as the work settles.
